Fourmile Lake Running Camp 2014
What another fun filled weekend in the woods! After a rainy Thursday night, Friday's climb up Mt. McLoughlin was looking to be a chilly experience. The mild temperatures helped us summit the mountain in under 2 hours – the sweep group completing in 2 hours 11 minutes – breaking our group record from the last two years. At the top we crouched behind a wall of rocks huddled together like penguins clutching for warmth as the misty clouds filled our 360 degree view. After eating lunch we glissade down the snowy mountainside into the blanket of white until breaking back into the clear sky. We ran most of the way back down, arriving back at the trailhead in 1 hour 15 minutes.
The next day, as the sun was beaming down on Saturday afternoon, we took a jaunt over to Budger lake – just northeast of Fourmile Lake – where we jumped in for a quick swim. The mosquitos quickly found us causing us to hop around and swat as we put our clothes back on, running most of the way back. When dark fell in camp around 9:30 we grabbed our headlamps and took off down a rocky single-track trail to Squaw Lake and back. After completing the nearly 4 mile run under the starry sky, four of us took a dip in the refreshing, but slightly frigid, Fourmile Lake.
The food all weekend was fantastic, we played hours of group games around the fire, and spent a good amount of time chopping and sawing wood. All-in-all it was a great weekend. Steens Mountain Running Camp in two weeks!
